Abstract

Critical vegetation in urban and peri-urban areas is essential for mitigating extreme heat, preventing wildfires, and maintaining ecological resilience. Its accelerated loss during heat waves and prolonged droughts negatively impacts human health, environmental stability, and food security. / Mulches or ground covers to reduce evaporation.Microembalses o almacenamiento temporal de agua. / Micro-reservoirs or temporary water storage.Protección contra exposición directa al calor extremo. / Protection against direct extreme heat exposure. These combined actions create a comprehensive approach, where aerial intervention is rapid and strategic, complemented by sustainable local measures, maximizing the resilience of critical vegetation under extreme conditions. Ensure critical vegetation survives during heat waves and prolonged droughts, preserving its ecological function, reducing wildfire risk, and protecting human and urban health. “Mitigating Extreme Heat and Drought through Helicopter-Deployed Solar Desalination Systems for Critical Vegetation Protection”Extreme Heat and Drought: A Critical Risk for Cities and EcosystemsRecent days have experienced extreme heat waves, with temperatures exceeding safe limits for human health and work activity.Prolonged drought threatens the survival of urban and peri-urban vegetation, increasing the risk of wildfires and degradation of key ecosystems.Vegetation loss leads to:Increased urban heat island effectReduced evapotranspiration and ambient humidityDecreased ecological resilience to face future climate eventsThe situation is urgent: without immediate action, the combination of extreme heat and drought may cause irreversible vegetation damage, worsening urban and environmental health.Rapid and strategic proposal:Aerial transport of seawater and passive solar desalination modules to critical areas.Local production of freshwater for vegetation survival irrigation.Keeping vegetation alive as a natural barrier against heat, wildfires, and urban degradation.Strategic interventions now can prevent ecological collapse and protect human health, before reaching a tipping point.AbstractThe sustained increase in extreme temperatures, combined with prolonged droughts, is causing an accelerated loss of vegetation cover in urban and peri-urban areas, increasing wildfire risk, intensifying the urban heat island effect, and degrading human and environmental health. This proposal explores the technical and environmental feasibility of using firefighting helicopters (Bambi bucket–type systems) for the aerial transport of lightweight passive solar desalination modules and seawater, aiming to produce freshwater in situ for vegetation survival irrigation at critical locations. The approach prioritizes climate mitigation, early adaptation, and the preservation of strategic vegetation, particularly under scenarios of extreme summer heat followed by dry winters.1. IntroductionExtreme heat waves reduce human performance, degrade infrastructure, and cause severe thermal stress on vegetation. When such events coincide with prolonged droughts, vegetation loss accelerates, reducing evapotranspiration and reinforcing local warming feedback loops. Vegetation loss during summer compromises ecological resilience during the following dry winter, increasing the likelihood of wildfires and ecosystem service collapse.2. Scientific FrameworkResearch in urban climatology and plant physiology shows that:Living vegetation reduces local temperatures through shading and evapotranspiration.Prolonged water stress leads to irreversible vegetation mortality, even if rainfall resumes later.Vegetation loss increases surface temperatures, soil dryness, and fire frequency.Extreme heat significantly reduces human capacity to perform complex tasks safely and effectively. Therefore, maintaining vegetation survival, even with minimal irrigation, produces a disproportionately positive climatic impact.3. Objective of the ProposalTo evaluate a rapid climate response strategy based on:Aerial transport of seawater and passive solar desalination modules.Local freshwater production for strategic irrigation.Protection of critical vegetation during extreme heat and drought events.4. Description of the Proposed System4.1 Aerial TransportUse of helicopters already deployed for wildfire suppression.Adaptation of Bambi bucket–type systems for loads that are:Flexible or semi-rigidAerodynamically stableReusable4.2 Solar Desalination ModulesPassive solar distillation systems. No electrical energy consumption.Slow but continuous freshwater production.Designed for non-potable use, specifically vegetation irrigation.4.3 Triple Thermal InsulationThe containers incorporate:External reflective layer (solar radiation reduction).Intermediate thermal insulation (evaporation control).Internal layer optimized to maintain the thermal gradient required for distillation.5. Priority ApplicationsUrban green corridors.Peri-urban forested areas.Vegetated firebreaks.Parks and areas with critical climatic functions. The goal is not intensive irrigation, but preventing vegetation mortality.6. Advantages of the ApproachReuses existing aerial firefighting infrastructure.Requires no electrical grids or major civil works. Can be rapidly deployed during climate emergencies.Simultaneously contributes to:Heat mitigationFire risk reductionHuman health protectionEnvironmental conservation7. LimitationsDoes not replace urban water supply systems.Limited scalability: strategic rather than mass deployment.Requires logistical coordination and territorial planning. These limitations define responsible use, rather than undermining feasibility.8. ConclusionUnder scenarios of accelerating global warming and recurrent droughts, adaptation strategies must be rapid, realistic, and based on existing technologies. The aerial transport of solar desalination modules for the protection of critical vegetation represents a complementary tool capable of reducing local climate impacts and preventing irreversible ecological damage before reaching climatic tipping points.
