Technical Report: The Integration of BIM and Energy Simulation Tools
Abstract
The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is currently undergoing a paradigm shift toward "Performance-Based Design." The central pillar of this shift is the seamless connection between BIM (the digital twin of physical assets) and BEM (the digital twin of thermal performance). While BIM focuses on geometry and spatial data, energy simulation tools analyze thermodynamic behavior. Historically, these existed in silos, leading to data loss and "re-modelling" fatigue. This report analyses the current state of interoperability, the roles of schema like gbxml and IFC, and the emerging trend of real-time simulation within the BIM environment.
