Abstract

Observed wavenumbers (cm-1) and assignments for the main Raman bands in the spectra of DNA- and RNA-melanin complexes. Letters between brackets refer to the example spectra shown in Fig 2: (A) DNA-eumelanin complex (from RV melanocytes). (B) RNA-eumelanin-pheomelanin complex (from BP melanocytes). Although Raman analyses indicate that pheomelanin is the predominant pigment produced by BP melanocytes (which is corroborated by the resulting pigmentation phenotype; Fig 1), the presence of eumelanin Raman bands in RNA extracts means that eumelanin is also produced albeit in lower amounts. (C) RNA-pheomelanin complex (from BP melanocytes). (D) control RNA containing no melanin (from WP melanocytes). Theoretical Raman bands are those that have previously been reported.
