ENT 153L (UC Davis) - Case Study Scenarios for Vector-Borne Disease (VBD) Management and Public Health Response
Abstract
This resource consists of five evidence-based case studies designed for students in medical entomology and public health. Each scenario—covering Typhus, Dengue, Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever—challenges learners to adopt the role of a public health officer responding to a localized outbreak. The materials are structured to promote critical thinking regarding the complex drivers of disease transmission, including:Environmental & Infrastructure Factors: Standing water, poor drainage, and sanitation management.Ecological Drivers: Wildlife reservoirs (opossums, deer) and stray animal populations (dogs, cats).Social & Community Dynamics: Engagement with underserved communities, tribal nations, and local stakeholders.Learning Objectives:Identify key stakeholders and essential information needed for an effective public health response.Develop comprehensive immediate and long-term Action Plans for vector control and disease prevention.Formulate strategies for public awareness, educational outreach, and inter-agency coordination.Evaluate intervention success through defined metrics.
