Human-AI Hybridity Is Not New. Whats New Is the Disappearance of Accountability
Abstract
Human–AI hybridity is not historically new.Humans have always acted through tools, institutions, and symbolic systems. What is new is the structural disappearance of accountability.AI systems increasingly reorganize decision-making in ways that diffuse ownership of action. Outcomes occur, consequences follow, yet no actor can fully claim authorship. Responsibility becomes ambient—distributed across designers, deployers, operators, and institutions—without being operationally assumable by any of them. The core question of the algorithmic age is not whether machines think. It is whether anyone still stands behind decisions.
