Genocidal War in Tigray: Gendered Violations, Enforced Disappearances, Sexual Violence & UN Submissions (2025–2026) – GEM Tigray
Abstract
This dataset compiles formal submissions by GEM Tigray to multiple United Nations human rights mechanisms between December 2025 and February 2026. The document provides structured legal and evidence-based analysis concerning ongoing violations in Tigray, Ethiopia, following the 2020–2022 genocidal war. The submissions were made to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and UN Special Procedures, including the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls and the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants. Key themes include: • Conflict-related sexual violence and reproductive violence • Violence against mothers and intergenerational harm • Enforced disappearances and arbitrary detention • Explosive remnants of war (ERW) and landmine contamination • Structural violence through siege, starvation, and denial of healthcare • Migration externalization and gendered risks in deportation contexts • Transitional justice, denial, negationism, and accountability barriers The document integrates references to findings from international investigations, survivor documentation initiatives, and humanitarian reporting. It contributes to global scholarship on atrocity documentation, gendered harms in armed conflict, Indigenous peoples’ rights, and post-conflict accountability. This resource is relevant for researchers, UN practitioners, policymakers, transitional justice experts, gender scholars, and legal analysts examining Ethiopia, Tigray, and international human rights law. This compilation preserves primary advocacy documentation submitted to UN mechanisms during a critical accountability window. It offers researchers and policymakers structured, citation-ready material linking gendered conflict harms to international legal standards, including CEDAW, ICCPR, CRC, and refugee law frameworks. The document is particularly valuable for: • Academic research on genocide and atrocity crimes • Policy development on gender in conflict settings • Transitional justice and denialism studies • Migration governance and non-refoulement analysis • UN reporting and shadow-report preparation
