Abstract

DescriptionA single tomato purchased from a commercial retailer (product origin: Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan) developed striking macroscopic needle-like mold structures shortly after purchase. Only one tomato out of the batch was affected. The mold grew in elongated, needle-like formations from blackened, degraded tissue, reaching several millimetres in length. The unusual morphology initially resembled crystalline structures, but was subsequently identified as mold. This record is shared simply as a photographic observation of an unusually visually striking mold growth on a fresh commercial tomato. No scientific claim is made. Species identification was not performed.Acquisition details:Sample origin: Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan (commercial retail)
