Social Physics of the Silent Synapses of Territorial Bodies. Presuppositions for a Prototypical and Transformative Research-Action Investment (with Experimental Protocol)
Abstract
This paper applies the integrated framework of contemporary social physics — dissipative thermodynamics, allometric scaling laws and complex network topology — to the phenomenon of rural settlement abandonment in the Po Valley and analogous European territories. It reconceptualises abandoned farmsteads (cascinali, masserie, pousadas) not as obsolete relics but as silent synapses: physically intact nodes of a territorial nervous system whose signal has been diverted, not destroyed, by the infrastructural rewiring of the past century and a half. Drawing on Prigogine's theory of dissipative structures, Bejan's constructal law, the urban scaling work of West and Bettencourt, Barabási's network science and the neuroscientific literature on silent synapse reactivation, the paper argues that a convergence of conditions — the diminishing returns of urban complexity, the isotropic connectivity afforded by fibre optics, and the growing demand for low-entropy organisational forms — is opening a bifurcation window in which small, deliberate perturbations can trigger the reactivation of these dormant nodes. The paper identifies the ecological niche of the farmstead and the organisational typologies (therapeutic communities, immersive research laboratories, regenerative food production, artisanal micro-manufactures, distributed communities of practice) whose signal patterns are compatible with that niche. It then presents a full experimental protocol for controlled nucleation in the lower Po Valley (Cremona–Mantua–southern Brescia corridor), articulated across three phases: single-node activation with metabolic, topological and psychophysiological measurement clusters; embryonic network formation with emergent-property testing including a novel index of semantic autonomy; and codification of a scalable operational genome. The quasi-experimental design, validity framework and economic sustainability model are specified in detail. The work is conceived not as a concluded academic exercise but as the theoretical foundation for a prototype research-action intervention to be activated before the structural window of the adjacent possible closes.
