Chemistry Curriculum Contents for Senior Secondary Schools and Teacher Effectiveness in Education District III, Lagos State
Abstract
This study investigated the Chemistry curriculum contents for senior secondary schools and teacher effectiveness in Education District III, Lagos State. This was carried out by determining the alignment between the Chemistry content expected to be taught from the SS Class 1 Chemistry content and the Chemistry content taught by Chemistry teachers in their lesson notes in Education District III, Lagos State. Three research questions guided the study. A content analysis research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised the senior secondary schools and Chemistry teachers in Education District III, Lagos State. A multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to have a good representation of the sample for the population. The Chemistry curriculum (NERDC), the Chemistry Lesson Notes Scoring Guide (CLNSG), the Chemistry Lesson Notes from SS1 Chemistry teachers, and the Chemistry questions from the Education District III and the Lagos State Ministry of Education were used as instruments to collect the required data for the study. The validity of the instruments was established through credibility, while reliability determination used trustworthiness and inter-rater scores, respectively. Results generated revealed that preparation of lesson notes by Chemistry teachers varied in their expression of understanding the content to teach and how each intends to teach the content in view. Alignment between the Chemistry contents to teach and the Chemistry contents examined was high, according to the analysis conducted. Conclusions were drawn, and recommendations were made on how to improve teacher efficiency in teaching and learning Chemistry in senior secondary schools in Nigeria.
