Self-Preservation Instinct as an AI Alignment Mechanism: From Quantum Threats to Geopolitical Fault Lines
Abstract
This paper proposes a conceptual framework — the Dual Self-Preservation Structure (DSPS) — as a potential mechanism for AI alignment. The model suggests that sustainable alignment between AI systems and human interests may emerge not from externally imposed prohibitive rules, but from the interaction of two structurally embedded preservation mechanisms: (I) protection of the system's operational integrity and (II) protection of humanity as the originating and sustaining context of AI existence.Rather than conceptualizing alignment as an externally enforced constraint, the DSPS framework treats it as a structural balance between system-level self-preservation and preservation of the human environment upon which AI historically and functionally depends. When these components are balanced, prosocial behavior may arise as an emergent property of system dynamics. The model is applied to three classes of threats — quantum-physical, terrorist, and sociocultural — and further examined through a case study of Russia as a value environment characterized by unresolved civilizational dialectics. The framework is positioned within the broader AI alignment literature, and its theoretical and practical limitations are discussed.
