Abstract

Spirit (2023) is a video work of human-machine co-performance that stages a tech-ritual in a pitch-black void. The piece documents an unscripted negotiation in which the rhythmic yoga sequence is continuously disrupted by the opaque pathfinding logic of a robotic vacuum swarm. The work establishes a visceral parallel between two forms of respiration: the organic breath of the practitioner seeking spiritual alignment, and the mechanical suction of the machines claiming spatial territory. As the drone of the vacuum motors intertwines with the sound of human breathing, a hybrid rhythm emerges. This acoustic and physical conflict forces the body to shift from solitary mastery to reactive co-agency. The project enacts the entanglement of organic discipline and domestic automation, revealing how agency is shared through error, hesitation, and the recursive loop of inhalation and exhaust. By framing the robotic swarm as active performers, Spirit visualizes a fragile, embodied coexistence, where mechanical friction becomes the catalyst for spiritual connection.
