Abstract

This data set contains hourly averaged PM10 in-situ aerosol absorption measured by a particle soot absorption photometer (PSAP) and a continuous light absorption photometer (CLAP) located at NOAA's Barrow Atmospheric Baseline Observatory (BRW) for the time period 2009-2022. The PSAP is described in Bond et al. (1999). The CLAP is described in Ogren et al. (2017). In this data set, the PSAP measured from January 1, 2009 through August 15, 2014. The CLAP measured from August 16, 2014 through December 31, 2022. The data are reported at STP (Tstd=0 C) and have standard corrections for instrument artifacts applied (Bond et al., 1999; Ogren, 2010). The data are quality controlled (i.e., have undergone manual review for instrument issues), but the standard screening for local contamination has not been applied. Thus, the dataset includes data from all wind directions, including the 130 to 360 degree wind sector encompassing the village of Utqiagvik, Alaska. More general information about the screening algorithm can be found in Sheridan et al. (2016).The file format is: DateTimeUTC,BaB0_A11,BaG0_A11,BaR0_A11, where time is given in UTC, and BaB0_A11, BaG0_A11 and BaR0_A11 represent the blue (467 nm), green (528 nm) and red (652 nm) wavelengths of the CLAP.These data were used to make Figure S7 in the supplemental materials of Deng et al. (2026).References:Bond et al.,"Calibration and intercomparison of filter-based measurements of visible light absorption by aerosols," Aerosol Science and Technology, 30, 582-600, 1999.Deng et al., "China’s Contribution to Arctic Black Carbon Declined From 2009 to 2022," accepted for publication in Earth's Future, 2026.Ogren, "Comment on “Calibration and Intercomparison of Filter-Based Measurements of Visible Light Absorption by Aerosols,” Aerosol Science and Technology, 44:589–591, 2010.Ogren et al., "Continuous Light Absorption Photometer for Long-Term Studies," Atmos Meas.
