Abstract

This field guide translates Co-Cognition into recognizable experiences and practical distinctions. It examines how repeated interaction with AI can influence thought formation, writing, memory, interpretation, judgment, and the ability to initiate or organize reasoning independently.Topics include semantic scaffolding, cognitive outsourcing, cognitive debt, externalized memory, recursive feedback, and the mirror effect. The guide identifies signs that a human-AI cognitive loop remains grounded, signs that it may be drifting, and practices that preserve independent judgment and corrective contact. The central distinction is between AI entering the formation of thought and that distributed process becoming a pathway to Cognitive Drift.
