Abstract

These are the semi-structured interview guides used to collect data in a qualitative cross-sectional study examining gendered roles, barriers, and opportunities in livestock health management across the continuum of care (disease prediction, prevention, detection, and treatment) in smallholder dairy and poultry farming systems in Kenya and Zambia. Data were collected between April and May 2025 using key informant interviews, in-depth interviews with women farmers, and focus group discussions involving a total of 23 key informants, 20 women farmers, and 135 focus group participants. Guides were tailored for dairy and poultry contexts. The repository contains guides developed for a dairy farming context in Kenya; the poultry and Zambian guides follow the same structure.Data collection was conducted in accordance with ethical approvals obtained from Chuka University Institutional Ethics Review Committee (Ref: CUIERC/NACOSTI/706; Approval Number: NACOSTI/NBC/AC-0812), NACOSTI (Ref. 557493, License Number: NACOSTI/P/25/4172545), and the Excellence in Research Ethics and Science Converge Institutional Review Board, Zambia (Ref. 2025-Mar-013). Verbal informed consent was obtained from all participants prior to data collection and audio recording.
