Abstract

This repository contains the dataset and analysis code used in the study:"Locating Moonquakes With Single Station Seismology" by Doyeon Kim, Jung-Hun Song, and Nicholas C. Schmerr. The repository includes processed Apollo seismic waveforms, polarization analysis results, a summary catalogue, and the analysis scripts used to estimate back-azimuth and incidence angles for lunar seismic events. Dataset StructureAfter unzipping dataset.zip, the repository is organized as follows:AI – Artificial impacts (Saturn V booster and Lunar Module impacts)DMQ – Deep moonquake events and clustersIM – Meteoroid impactsSMQ – Shallow moonquakescode – Analysis scriptsbackazimuth_inclination_catalogue_Kimetal2026.txt – Summary catalogue of the final polarization measurements (Table S1)Each event-type directory (AI, DMQ, IM, SMQ) contains subdirectories for the Apollo stations:lp12lp14lp15lp16Each station directory contains individual event folders (e.g., LM-12, LM-14, LM-15, LM-17, S4B-13, S4B-14, S4B-15, S4B-16, S4B-17).Each event folder includes:A processed waveform file (.mat) containing three-component seismic waveforms (Z, N, and E).A polarization analysis output fileSummary CatalogueThe backazimuth_inclination_catalogue_Kimetal2026.txt file contains the summary dataset corresponding to Table S1 of the manuscript. Each row represents one event recorded at one Apollo station and includes:Event nameEvent typeRecording stationSignal-to-noise ratio (SNR)Estimated back-azimuth (°)Estimated incidence angle (°)The reported values correspond to the preferred measurements selected from the time–frequency sensitivity analysis. Values shown in parentheses represent the associated measurement uncertainties.Polarization Output FilesThese are the per-event polarization measurement files stored as MATLAB .mat files. These files are named in the format: {station}_{event}_result.mat. Each file contains the full time–frequency polarization analysis results used to compute back-azimuth and incidence estimates in the sensitivity analysis. Specifically, each .mat file includes:phiVH, phiHH – polarization phase parameters derived from eigenvector decomposition of the three-component seismic signalThetaH, ThetaV – horizontal and vertical propagation angles obtained from the polarization eigenstructurelinearity – measure of polarization linearity based on eigenvalue ratiosspecscale – spectral power scaling factor used for frequency-dependent weightingtime – time axis of the time–frequency polarization analysisfreqs – frequency axis of the analysisNpwr – exponent controlling spectral weighting in the analysisCode DescriptionThe code file is a processing MATLAB script that:Load pre-processed waveform segmentsApply bandpass filtering and time-window extractionPerform time–frequency polarization analysis result visualizationCompute circular statistics (mean back-azimuth and uncertainty)Conduct sensitivity sweeps over frequency–time windowsEstimate SNR
