CELPy Maps V1 -- 10 m land cover maps of Paraguay 2017-2025 with focus on crops
Abstract
National-scale land-cover rasters of Paraguay at 10 m resolution. Projection is WGS_1984_Equal_Earth_Americas (EPSG 8858). Dataset includes ten raster products:Eight single year land cover maps with 36 possible land cover classes (CELpy36_V1_2017-18.tif through CELpy36_V1_2024-25.tif) with accompanying key: CELPy_LUT.csv and colormaps: CELPy36_colorsOne summary product of agricultural systems in 2025 (CELPy_CropSystems2025.tif) (summarizing eight years of agricultural history in Paraguay), distinguishing smallholder systems and large-scale cropping with historical detail (new agriculture, abandoned agriculture, stable agriculture or unstable/shifting agriculture). Class details are provided in CropSystems_key.csv.Map product (CELpy32_V1_2021-22_Smallholder) forming the basis of analyses in Walker et. al 2026, Improving smallholder representation in crop maps. Environ.Res.:Food Syst. This is based on CELpy36_V1_2021-22, but has crop pixels classified as smallholder vs. homogeneous crop based on field size and moving window assessment described in the paper. For all products, the mapping year is from June to June. The primary cropping season thus falls in the second nominal year (or the nominal year for CELPy_CropSystems2025.tif). Methods and accuracy assessment are presented in: CELPy: A detailed land cover dataset for Paraguay from 2017 to 2025 (available at: https://klwalker-sb.github.io/klwalker-sb/files/py_mapping_data_paper.pdf until published)
