Intelligent Metasurface for Synergistic Scattering Reduction-Enhancement Modulation
Abstract
Modern radar detection threats necessitate diverse countermeasures such as electromagnetic deception and stealth, while maintaining high traceability facilitates alliance coordination. Although numerous studies have focused on electromagnetic scattering enhancement or reduction, the conflicting energy modulation requirements of structures have rendered research on the integrated control of both functionalities scarce. This investigation introduces an Intelligent Scattering Modulation Metasurface (ISMM) to realize large dynamic range modulation of electromagnetic scattering for both enhancement and reduction. The ISMM integrates scattering enhancing cells (ECs) and reducing cells (RCs) in a single layer to improve compactness and minimize crosstalk. The performance and topology of these cells are optimized by balancing overall structural scattering enhancement and reduction requirements. By coordinately regulating the amplifier gain in ECs and the reflectivity in RCs, ISMM enables a quasi-continuous radar cross-section (RCS) modulation from +20 dB to −20 dB within the S-band, realizing functionalities including ultra-stealth, fusion camouflage, dynamic deception, and high traceability. Experimental validation confirms that the fabricated prototype exhibits large dynamic range electromagnetic scattering modulation capability. Leveraging ISMM’s unique modulation performance, a collaborative jamming operation mode with complex camouflage effects is proposed. This work paves an unprecedented pathway for the development of electromagnetic camouflage devices.
