Indian Approaches to Sustainability; Lessons from IKS
Abstract
This study attempts to explore the sustainable practices followed in the businesses during ancient India. We have examined businesses like mining, textile, metal works, construction, farming, and trade. Indian craft, metal works and Agri-products were globally renowned, and this feat was achieved by following sustainable practices like efficient utilization of resources, proper production processes, with less distress to the ecology. The key feature of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is that it promotes harmony with nature and fosters compassion, discourages the exploitation of natural resources, advocates sustainable resources management and good governance. The present businesses encompassing these practices are discussed
