Abstract

Summary: In a hadith reported in al-Milal wa al-Nihal (Religions and Sects) by Shahrastani, Gabriel found the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, among his companions and taught them what Islam is in the form of questions to which the Prophet responded. The first of these questions was about Islam, and the first answer given by the blessed Muhammad is the shahada or testimony. Consequently, this allows us to highlight the importance of this first pillar of Islam, which we thus address in the teachings of Elhadj Malick Sy (died in 1922), one of the most important spiritual figures in the mystical path or Tijaniyya tariqa in Senegal. Keywords: Pillar - Testimony (Shahada) – Islam - Spiritual figures - Mystical path (tariqa).
