Abstract

José María Arguedas was a peruvian anthropologist and writer widely recognized for his teachings about the transcendence of the indigenous inhabitants of the Andes; aspects of his personal life such as depression and suicide have also attracted the attention of academia. The purpose of this article is to identify the experiences that were part of the writer’s life in order to develop an approximation of his psychological profile. A qualitative methodological approach and life history research method were used, through the analysis of documents sent by the author to his closest circle (speeches, personal diaries and academic materials on the subject). It is concluded that his personality is characterized by marked interpersonal dependence, depressive syndrome that has accompanied him since his early years, high levels of resilience, and empathy towards the most vulnerable people.
