Carencias lingüístico-pragmáticas en la subtitulación televisiva en tiempo real
Abstract
This study examines the challenges of providing adequate linguistic and pragmatic information through television subtitles for individuals with hearing impairments in Spain. According to the Survey on Disability, Personal Autonomy, and Dependency Situations (EDAD, 2020), over a million people in Spain suffer from hearing disabilities, with many relying on subtitles for access to information, especially in television broadcasts. The study critiques the limitations of current subtitles, particularly their focus on transcribing spoken words while neglecting pragmatic aspects such as tone and context. The primary objective is to assess how well subtitles convey not just the content, but the intended meaning and interpretation, ensuring deaf viewers can fully decode and understand the message. Through a mixed-method approach, combining a theoretical review with empirical analysis of a Spanish TV program, this research aims to identify potential gaps and suggest improvements to enhance the effectiveness of subtitles in providing complete communicative access.
