Abstract

This study aims to construct Muhammadiyah's ethical foundation by systematically examining the development of tajdīd, purification, dynamization, and ijtihad discourses in scholarly publications from 2020 to 2025.Grounded in the premise that Muhammadiyah's ethical orientation is dynamic rather than static, this research employs a qualitative meta-synthesis to analyze twenty peer-reviewed articles with verified DOIs across national and international journals.Through this approach, the study integrates interdisciplinary insights-ranging from theology, Islamic thought, education, Islamic law, and social studies-to map how the four core concepts of Muhammadiyah function as an interconnected ethical structure. The findings reveal that tajdīd serves as an integrative framework that harmonizes purification and dynamization.Purification has shifted from its earlier conventional meaning of ritual correction toward a broader moral purification that emphasizes tawhid, ethical conduct, social justice, and human dignity.Dynamization emerges as the practical expression of these values through innovations in education, da'wah, institutional governance, and responses to modern societal challenges.Meanwhile, ijtihad and the manhaj tarjih operate as methodological instruments that navigate the relationship between scriptural texts and contemporary contexts, ensuring that Muhammadiyah's ethical decisions remain adaptive to developments in science, technology, and socio-cultural transformation. The study concludes that Muhammadiyah's contemporary ethical foundation is best understood as a progressive tajdīd ethic-an ethic that integrates doctrinal purity with social engagement in a coherent and constructive manner. The strength of this research lies in its comprehensive mapping of recent literature, while its limitation stems from its exclusive reliance on DOI-indexed publications without incorporating empirical field data.Future studies are encouraged to adopt empirical and comparative approaches to further enrich understandings of Muhammadiyah's ethical praxis.
