Abstract

The article describes an accidental archival discovery that helped resolve a significant research problem around excavations conducted nearly 150 years ago. This discovery led to the identification of a burial ground with a barrow, where an early medieval sword was found in 1882. The barrow still retains a visible trace of excavations at the spot where the sword and a bucket were located. The presence of stone structures serving as enclosures and internal features provides important evidence for classifying these barrows as Orzeszkowo type graves, which appeared in Pomerania at the turn of the 10th/11th centuries to the mid-11th century. This discovery highlights the invaluable role of archival materials in reconstructing the past, and the crucial part chance plays in archaeological research.
