Thermal efficiency in residential buildings: A radiant time series and building information modeling approach
Abstract
Improvement of thermal efficiency in the residential buildings is essential. It minimizes energy consumption, enhances indoor comfort, and supports sustainable development goals. This research presents an integrated method that combines the Radiant Time Series (RTS) method with Building Information Modeling (BIM). This integrated method evaluates and optimizes the thermal performance of the residential structures. The RTS approach offers a time-resolved analysis of the solar heat gains and the internal load effects, which enables a more precise esti- mation of cooling and heating loads throughout the day. Simulta- neously, BIM provides the comprehensive digital representation of the building geometry, materials, and thermal properties, which allows dynamic simulation, modeling and performance assessment. The integrated framework in this research, quantifies the impact of design features, orientation, and insulation levels on thermal efficiency. The simulated results demonstrate that integration of RTS within a BIM environment significantly enhances the accuracy of thermal load predictions and supports informed decision-making during the early design stages of the buildings. This research represents the potential of integrated analytical, simulation and modeling techniques to create more energy-efficient residential buildings.
