Abstract

Objectives The objectives were to explore the impact of digital platforms, including AI-driven chatbots, on adolescent mental health, highlighting the psychological vulnerabilities of adolescents in digital spaces and the need for ethical regulation and collaborative community support. Methods This article integrates developmental psychology frameworks with literature on adolescent identity formation, online interactions, and mental health. Data sources included peer-reviewed articles, case studies, and reports on digital platform use and its psychological impact on youth. Results Adolescents increasingly rely on digital platforms for emotional support, with these platforms simultaneously providing temporary relief and exacerbating mental health vulnerabilities. AI-driven tools, while simulating human interaction, can foster unhealthy dependencies and may inadvertently reinforce negative behaviors, as seen in a high-profile case of suicide linked to chatbot interactions. The lack of regulation and safeguards on digital platforms creates a substantial risk for adolescents’ emotional well-being. Collaborative efforts among families, schools, mental health professionals, and policymakers are essential to mitigate these risks. Conclusions Digital platforms profoundly influence adolescent mental health, necessitating ethical AI design and stronger regulations to protect vulnerable users. By aligning innovation with emotional safety, technology can support rather than harm adolescent development. This requires a multidisciplinary approach to foster resilience, promote digital literacy, and ensure safe, supportive online environments for youth. Further research is needed to guide interventions and inform policy changes that prioritize adolescent well-being in the digital age.
