From the jungle to the underground: a comparative reading of extraheccionism in Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 21st century
Abstract
This article proposes a comparative analysis of the phenomenon of extra-extraction in Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, exploring how the violent extraction of strategic minerals is linked to co-opted state structures, armed actors, and international markets under the global political economy of contemporary capitalism.Using a critical approach that integrates institutional, social, and geopolitical dimensions, common structural patterns of dispossession, violence, and subordination are identified, which shape a global extractivist regime with direct impacts on conflicts, governance, and territorial dynamics in the Global South.
