The Meeting at La Mejorana: Its Enigmas and Lessons
Abstract
La Mejorana Meeting as a pivotal episode in the political and strategic configuration of Cuba's Necessary War.Through a historical interpretative approach, it examines the ideological tensions between José Martí, Antonio Maceo, and Máximo Gómez, as evidenced in the encounter of May 5, 1895.Drawing on primary sources such as José Martí's campaign diary, as well as testimonies from Antonio Maceo, Fermín Valdés Domínguez, Enrique Collazo, José Miró Argenter, and recent historiographical studies, the article reconstructs the enigmas surrounding the meeting-namely, the absence of formal agreements, tactical divergences, and the lack of conclusive documentation. The analysis highlights the tensions between Martí's republican project and the insurgent military logic represented by Maceo and Gómez, revealing a structural dilemma between political institutionalism and wartime efficacy.Furthermore, it explores the implications of this episode for understanding revolutionary leaderships in colonial contexts, with particular attention to the relationship between civil and military power, the construction of consensus in wartime scenarios, and the normative agency of peripheral actors.
