The Russian constitution of 1993: Vladimir Putin. consolidation of a new political system
Abstract
The 1993 Russian Constitution, originally conceived as a framework for the transition to liberal democracy, has been used by President Vladimir Putin to consolidate a new political system in Russia.Since coming to power in 2000, Putin and his policies have shaped the application of the Constitution, adapting its legal framework to the needs of a model of government geared toward stability and long-term national development. The constitutional amendments promoted by Putin in 2008, 2014, and 2020 have strengthened the executive branch and the presidential figure, and introduced significant changes in three other key institutions of the Russian political system: the Federal Assembly, the Government, and the Judiciary. The political project that began two decades ago has not only been completed, but has been comprehensively surpassed, culminating in a new legal and political era for Russia.
