Abstract

With the emergence of artificial intelligence and its accessibility, there has been growing interest in studying dishonesty in the classroom, but academic integrity continues to be largely overlooked in the academic field. Therefore, the objective of this research is to explore how high school students understand integrity and academic dishonesty, with the aim of observing how students perceive dishonesty, understanding the justifications they give for this type of behavior, understanding whether they see themselves as honest or dishonest students, and determining whether there is an interference between the concepts of dishonesty and integrity. To this end, a questionnaire was administered to 27 students at a high school in Mexico City on these topics.Broadly speaking, it was found that students have difficulty defining the concept of academic integrity. In addition, there is an acceptance and normalization of dishonest behavior, even though throughout the questionnaire, students recognize that these actions can affect them personally as well as their teachers.Throughout this paper, a duality is presented among students, in which they assume themselves to be people of integrity, while at the same time they cannot adequately define the concept, they do not understand concepts such as corruption, and they additionally assume that they commit dishonest acts in the classroom. This paper presents an overview of the importance of addressing these concepts to design programs that promote academic integrity in the classroom.
