Exploring the Impact of Gamification Elements in Learning Management Systems on Intrinsic and Extrinsic Student Motivation: A Systematic Literature Review
Abstract
Gamification has gained significant attention in higher education to enhance student engagement and motivation in Learning Management Systems (LMS). This study conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to explore the impact of gamification elements on students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in online learning environments. The review follows the PRISMA methodology and analyzed studies published between 2014 and 2024. Key findings indicate that gamification elements such as points, badges, leaderboards, challenges, and storytelling play a crucial role in fostering motivation, interaction, and engagement. The results suggest that while gamification enhances student participation and learning experiences, its effectiveness depends on the design approach, student preferences, and long-term engagement strategies. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of aligning gamification elements with theoretical frameworks such as Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Flow Theory to optimize motivation and learning outcomes. This review provides valuable insights for educators, instructional designers, and researchers aiming to develop more adaptive and effective gamified learning systems.
