Abstract

The article examines the history of creation and artistic features of the altar decoration of St Petersburg Cathedral of the Savior on Spilled Blood. The role of the architect A. Parland and the historian of Christian art N. Pokrovsky in the development of the iconographic program of the pictorial ensemble is revealed. The reasons for making serious changes to the initial project of the iconographic program are detected. The activities of the author of the main altar compositions, the artist N. Kharlamov, are evaluated. The content and iconographic features of the compositions “Christ in Glory” and “The Sacrament of the Eucharist” are considered. The connection between the images created by Kharlamov and the Byzantine models and the works of Russian masters of church painting of the 1860s and 1880s is determined.
