Abstract

This study develops and empirically evaluates an artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML)-integrated framework for process optimization and advanced materials integration in U.S. oil and gas chemical manufacturing. The research addresses the persistent gap between nanostructured and advanced materials research and its scalable industrial application, particularly in environments affected by process inefficiencies, equipment degradation, corrosion, high energy consumption, material limitations, and implementation barriers. A quantitative, cross-sectional, case-study-based research design was employed using a structured five-point Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 250 professionals from petroleum refining, petrochemical manufacturing, natural-gas processing, specialty chemical manufacturing, and integrated multi-process facilities. Respondents included process and chemical engineers, materials and R&D specialists, operations managers, reliability professionals, data and technology professionals, and industrial decision-makers. The proposed framework integrates AI/ML-enabled process optimization, advanced materials integration, organizational and technological readiness, and industrial application and scalability to evaluate their combined influence on industrial performance. Statistical analysis using SPSS included descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha reliability testing, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression. Results indicated strong levels of process optimization (M = 4.08, SD = 0.61), advanced materials integration (M = 3.89, SD = 0.67), organizational and technological readiness (M = 3.95, SD = 0.64), industrial scalability (M = 3.76, SD = 0.71), and overall industrial performance (M = 4.11, SD = 0.58). Process optimization demonstrated the strongest correlation with industrial performance (r = .68, p < .001), while technological and organizational readiness showed a strong association with industrial scalability (r = .69, p < .001). The regression model explained 67.4% of the variance in industrial performance, with AI/ML-supported process optimization emerging as the strongest predictor (β = .457), followed by organizational and technological readiness (β = .318) and advanced materials integration (β = .262), all p < .001. The findings demonstrate that translating nanostructured materials research into industrial applications requires more than material innovation alone. Effective implementation depends on combining AI/ML-driven process intelligence, advanced materials, organizational readiness, and scalable deployment strategies to improve operational efficiency, equipment reliability, energy performance, and long-term competitiveness across U.S. oil and gas chemical manufacturing.
