Conceptual Understanding of Pitta in Relation to Its Anatomical Structures
Abstract
Background: Āyurveda is based on the Tridoṣa theory—Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha—which governs physiological functions. Pitta Doṣa is primarily responsible for digestion, metabolism, thermoregulation, and biochemical transformations. Although described functionally, its attributes suggest an underlying anatomical and physiological basis that may be correlated with modern biomedical concepts. Aim: To study Pitta Doṣa with reference to its Sthāna (sites) and explore its anatomical and physiological correlations. Methods: A conceptual, literature-based study was conducted through critical review of classical Ayurvedic texts to identify the functions and Sthāna of Pitta Doṣa. These were interpreted in light of contemporary anatomy and physiology, focusing on systems involved in metabolism, digestion, and heat regulation. Results: Pitta Doṣa is not a single anatomical entity but a functional principle operating through multiple sites. Its Sthāna correspond to regions of intense metabolic and biochemical activity mediated by enzymes, bile, hormones, pigments, and neurotransmitters. Conclusion: Pitta represents an integrated functional system associated with specific physiological processes. Correlating Ayurvedic concepts with modern science enhances their relevance and supports integrative understanding of health. Keywords: Pitta, Tridosha, Ayurveda, Metabolism, Physiology
