Abstract
The challenges of the modern business world are dual in nature: the necessity to generate profit while fulfilling Social Responsibility, and the need to preserve Human Well-being amidst a rapidly changing environment. Competition and occupational stress affect both the organization and the individual. The Thirukkural provides an ancient yet timeless framework for these two dimensions, treating social responsibility as a moral duty and mental health management as essential life wisdom. Thirukkural’s approach to social responsibility is rooted in the principle that organizations must function as an integral part of society. Couplets such as Kural 1033 ("They alone live who live by agriculture") and Kural 292 ("Speaking the truth is that which is free from all fault and productive of good") emphasize the importance of Giving Back to society and ensuring that actions yield a broader benefit. This aligns perfectly with the core principles of modern CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). Furthermore, its concepts on stress management are deeply embedded in a philosophy of life that integrates the internal and external self. Kural 628 ("He who seeks not pleasure, but regards pain as natural") and Kural 466 ("There are acts which should not be done") provide guidance on cultivating inner peace through Equanimity and Contentment. Additionally, Kural 152 ("Endure injuries always") and Kural 318 ("What is painful to oneself should not be done to others") highlight the significance of developing Resilience and Self-Awareness. In conclusion, the guidance offered by the Thirukkural advocates for an integrated vision where a successful business is defined not just by financial gains, but by the maintenance of a healthy mindset and responsible social connectivity.
