Abstract
In the history of Tamil literature, the Bhakti movement was not merely a religious revival; it was a literary revolution that elevated the Agapporul (interior/love) traditions of the Sangam era to a divine dimension. This article extensively examines the Agapporul tradition known as the 'Thozhi Kootru' (Confidante's Utterance) occurring in the Thevaram hymns, which hold a primary place in the Saiva Thirumurais. The article explains, with a philosophical background, how the character of the Thozhi (confidante), who acted as a shield for the lovers' clandestine and marital love in Sangam literature, transforms into a symbol of the 'Acharya' or 'Guru' who guides the soul toward God in Thevaram. Specifically, it logically discusses how the confidante announces to the world the mental changes, physical emaciation, and the journey toward God of the heroine (the soul) in the hymns of Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar. The article proves that the Agapporul tradition is utilized as a tool to explain the three realities of Saiva Siddhanta: Pati (God), Pasu (Soul), and Pasam (Bondage). Furthermore, this study concludes by comparing the subtle differences and similarities between the Sangam-era confidante and the Bhakti-literature confidante through tables.
