Abstract
This study explores the role of Desi traditions in Indian art forms, examining how folk literature and Bharatanatyam function as cultural expressions. Folk literature serves as a vibrant repository of social life, popular beliefs, rituals, emotions, and body language, reflecting the lived experiences of communities. Similarly, although Bharatanatyam has evolved within the classical Natya Shastra tradition, it incorporates Desi elements and has developed over time into a dynamic art form. The research investigates how bodily expressions, emotional articulations, gestures, and symbolic signs found in folk literature correspond with the Abhinaya traditions of Bharatanatyam. Specifically, it demonstrates that the natural movements and expressions observed in folk arts form the foundational basis for the Angika, Vachika, and Aharya Abhinaya in Bharatanatyam, illustrating a shared cultural substrate. Furthermore, the study emphasizes that Desi traditions act as a repository of social memory, ensuring the continuity of artistic practices and the preservation of cultural identity. Folk literature and Bharatanatyam, therefore, are not only independent art forms but also interconnected manifestations that preserve and convey the cultural identity of communities across generations.
