The artistic traditions of Tamil Nadu possess a history spanning thousands of years. In particular, the Silappathikaram, composed by Ilango Adigal in the 2nd century AD, serves as an encyclopedia of the music, dance, and dramatic arts of the Tamils. This research paper, centered on the 'Arangetru Kaadhai' (The Chapter of Ascending the Stage) within Silappathikaram, explores in detail the nuances of both the classical and folk arts of that era. It explains the debut performance (Arangetram) held by the dancer Madhavi at the age of twelve, the seven years of rigorous training she underwent for it, the precise architectural measurements of the performance stage, and the significance of the sacred rod known as the 'Talaikkol'.
