A Study on Translation Strategies of Three-character Phrases in the Government Work Report
Abstract
As a kind of idiom and a special language symbol, the difficulty of translation in Chinese three-character phrase is self-evident. In this study, the original text of the Government Work Report (hereinafter referred to as the GWR) from 2020 to 2022 and the official English translation are used as the corpus to classify the three-character phrases and explore their translation strategies under the guidance of Reception Aesthetics theory. It is found that in the GWRs of recent 3 years, there are mainly four types of three-character phrases: verb-object three-character phrases, modifier-modified three-character phrases, derivative three-character phrases and other types of three-character phrases; On the basis of being faithful to the original text, the translator takes into account the readers' acceptance as much as possible, and adopts two translation strategies: literal translation and liberal translation. This study aims to provide certain references for translators and later scholars.
