Abstract

The study aimed to determine the level of knowledge regarding the breast self-examination technique and breast cancer risk factors among female beneficiaries aged 20 to 50 years affiliated with UMF 47 during the second trimester of 2024. The study sought to describe sociodemographic characteristics and levels of knowledge related to early detection of breast cancer, with the purpose of generating information that would contribute to strengthening preventive strategies in primary health care. Breast cancer represents a priority public health problem worldwide, with high morbidity and mortality rates; therefore, early detection is essential as a strategy to improve prognosis and quality of life among women. The study had a quantitative approach with an observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive design. A total of 394 women who met the inclusion criteria were included. Sociodemographic variables and levels of knowledge regarding the breast self-examination technique and breast cancer risk factors were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The median age was 32 years, with a predominance of women with secondary education and married marital status. The level of knowledge regarding the breast self-examination technique was predominantly moderate, followed by a low level. Similarly, knowledge of breast cancer risk factors was mainly classified as moderate and low. The results evidenced the need to strengthen educational strategies directed at women of reproductive age from the primary care level, as well as to promote self-care and timely detection of breast cancer as fundamental actions to improve prognosis and reduce the burden of the disease
