Reconfigurando el Canon: Agencia y Disidencia en la Obra de Olin, Kahlo e Izquierdo en el México Posrevolucionario
Abstract
This essay analyzes the strategies of agency and dissent employed by Nahui Olin, Frida Kahlo, and María Izquierdo to negotiate their place within the hegemonic cultural project of post-revolutionary Mexico, which was dominated by a male perspective. The central objective is to demonstrate how, through their pictorial production and activism, these artists challenged prescribed gender roles, reinterpreted the female body outside of the male objectifying gaze, and constructed their own narrative that contested the artistic and social canons of their time. The study concludes that their trajectories, far from being isolated, form a cohesive front of cultural resistance. Although hindered by the machista policies of the era evidenced by their anonymization, objectification, and denial of opportunities their work laid the groundwork for a feminist reinterpretation of Mexican art, reconfiguring the canon to include the female experience and social critique from a gender perspective.
