Abstract

The objective of this research study was to provide a comprehensive description of the causes of failure rates in the bachelor’s degree in business administration. To this end, an exploration study was first conducted. The factors that affect students were identified, as well as the stage of their academic trajectory at which these factors occur most frequently. When analyzing failure rates, it was observed that courses in the accounting and finance areas have the highest number of failing students, which suggested a possible pattern of weak knowledge areas. To further explore the research problem, surveys and interviews were administered to students to understand and interpret how they learn, the applicability they give to the knowledge acquired, and the way in which they exercise their mathematical reasoning. According to the results obtained from the surveys and interviews, it was identified that the most frequently mentioned factors were poor study habits and a lack of understanding of the instructor. The information derived from these studies will make it possible to develop strategies aimed at reducing failure rates in these subjects and, potentially, decreasing the dropout rates associated with failing them.
