Abstract

The contemporary model of economic development around the world is harmful and unsustainable. It provides incentives for high resource extraction, consumption, and waste production, undermining any positive environmental outcomes. It has been suggested that the transition to a development model based on the circular economy (CE) is a possible and sustainable alternative. Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key ally in the adoption of the circular economy. It can assist in the design of resilient and sustainable products, support the creation of new circular business models, and endorse the broader infrastructure that would be required to scale circularity. However, there has been little reflection on the ethical considerations of using AI to achieve a more sustainable economy. This article aims to address this issue. It explains how and to what extent we can use AI to facilitate the transition to a circular economy internationally; it raises some ethical risks associated with AI for this purpose and revisits some economic policy recommendations to mitigate these risks.
