Abstract

Based on the progressive collapse of the so-called “rules-based international order” and on recent statements delivered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, this article developed a critical rereading of contemporary capitalism through the articulation between the work of Ellen Meiksins Wood and the notion of the entelechy of the market. The aim was to show that, in the context of 2026, the persistence of the capitalist order could not be understood solely through its institutional, state, or geopolitical structures, but required attention to the regimes of truth and forms of subjectivation that sustained its historical effectiveness. First, the article revisited Wood’s analysis of capitalist imperialism and the centrality of the state as a guarantor of economic coercion, highlighting its continued relevance for interpreting the contemporary instrumentalization of economic integration as a form of geopolitical pressure. Second, it argued that the interventions at Davos not only confirmed this structural diagnosis, but also starkly exposed the fictional character of the previous liberal order, shifting the discourse from promises of cooperation toward risk management, resilience, and forced adaptation. Within this framework, the article introduced the notion of the entelechy of the market as a genealogical key for understanding how capitalism managed to reproduce itself even when it abandoned any claim to justice. Through a theological-political reading, it argued that the market operated as a principle of veridiction that transformed structural coercion into internalized obedience and subordination into voluntary performance. Finally, it maintained that the articulation between the political architecture of capital and its spiritual infrastructure was indispensable for critically engaging with contemporary world history in a scenario of open rupture.
