Abstract

Nurse prescribing of medications represents a significant expansion in the scope of nursing practice, aiming to improve access to healthcare and optimize resources in overburdened health systems. This literature review examines global nurse prescribing practices, identifying regulatory variations, benefits, and challenges across different regions. Studies from developed and developing countries were analyzed, focusing on historical milestones, legislations, and impacts on health care. The results indicate that while countries like the United Kingdom and the United States have adopted advanced models, developing nations face barriers such as lack of training. In Brazil, recent updates by Anvisa highlight advances in nurses prescribing antimicrobials. It is concluded that nurse prescribing can enhance health equity, but requires robust regulation and continuous education.
