Abstract

This academic work aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the learning process, based on theoretical contributions from Educational Psychology. This qualitative bibliographic research is supported by classical and contemporary authors such as Deci and Ryan (2000), Vygotsky (2007), Ausubel (2003), and Bzuneck (2009), who discuss the psychological and sociocultural factors that shape student engagement. Initially, the study explores the concepts and characteristics of each type of motivation, emphasizing how personal interests, curiosity, and enjoyment of learning contribute to autonomy, while rewards, punishments, and external pressures often influence behavior in an immediate yet less enduring manner. The analysis also examines how these motivational elements affect performance, persistence when facing challenges, and the overall quality of learning in the school context. The theoretical findings indicate that intrinsic motivation plays a central role in fostering self-regulation and strengthening the learner’s connection with knowledge, whereas extrinsic motivation may serve as a complementary strategy in specific situations. It is concluded that balancing both types of motivation, combined with pedagogical practices attentive to students’ needs, is essential for promoting meaningful, humanizing, and sustainable learning.
