Research on the applicability of alternative decarbonization methods for cruise ships
Abstract
The dissertation examines technologies and approaches for decarbonization in maritime transport, with a focus on cruise vessels. The aim is to assess the effectiveness of the solutions applied to reduce emissions and to propose guidelines for a sustainable energy transition in the sector. International and European regulations (IMO, Fit for 55) and key technologies such as fuel cells, carbon capture, air lubrication, shore power, and alternative fuels - hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and biofuels - are analyzed. The experimental part uses data from the cruise ships Carnival Vista and AIDAprima. The results show that exhaust gas cleaning systems and additional energy-efficient solutions significantly reduce harmful emissions and help achieve the objectives of MARPOL Annex VI.
