Abstract

Sudan’s diaspora doctors are scattered around the world, from North America, to Europe, to the Arab Gulf countries to Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Sudanese doctors have continued to play a major role in responding to the country’s humanitarian and development needs, by supporting the health system, engaging in health diplomacy in their new home countries, or directly assisting and empowering affected communities in times of crisis. This article provides lessons learnt in health diplomacy, coordination - to break silos, streamline interventions and avoid duplication- pooling of resources - to achieve maximum efficiency and ensure governance application- and forging effective and viable linkages with local entities in the home country. The use of innovation and digital transformation to enhance engagement and response during critical times stand out as highlights to the Sudanese medical diaspora experience. The article provides lessons from the Sudan Doctors Abroad, a coalition of six organizations around the globe and the Academy of Medical Education in Conflict. The authors argue that the lessons learnt from Sudanese diaspora medical doctors demonstrate the live, dynamic localization agenda in action. They are worth documenting and sharing and could be adapted and replicated by other communities to benefit the home country in a timely, adaptable, and results-oriented manner. Our experience encourages cross-diaspora diplomacy, and collaboration across cultures for a stronger diaspora impact.
