Abstract

The chapters of this collective volume center on governmental research as a hybrid form, connecting fundamental and regulatory science in governmental agencies. Focusing on the case of Germany during the twentieth century, where five different political regimes followed on each other, the volume complements the analysis with studies on the United States, France, and Japan. All address the physical and engineering sciences, with applications from colonial aims to economic policy and military strategy.
