UTILISATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) TOOLS IN HIGHER EDUCATION CLASSROOM: A STUDY OF UNIVERSITY LECTURERS IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to transform higher education classrooms but its adoption depends on lecturers’ awareness and utilisation of AI tools. This study investigated the utilisation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education classrooms, focusing on university lecturers in Ondo State, Nigeria. Three research questions and one research hypothesis guided the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population consisted of all lecturers from both the private and government owned universities in Ondo State, Nigeria. Random sampling technique was used to select 450 lecturers as sample size of the study Data were collected using a researcher- developed questionnaire. The instrument was validated for content and face validity by three experts. The reliability coefficient was obtained using Cronbach Alpha which yielded 0.83 for the level of awareness and 0.79 for the level of utilization respectively. Research questions were analysed using mean and standard deviation, and the hypothesis was tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The findings of the study revealed among others that lecturers were aware of the AI tool for effective teaching and learning. The study recommends among others that universities should develop and implement comprehensive AI awareness programmes to educate lecturers.
