Abstract

It is with great pleasure and pride that I introduce this inaugural volume of the Handbook on Interdisciplinary Collaboration. As a university founded on a vision of service to both nation and knowledge, Nigerian Army University Biu is uniquely positioned to champion the boundary- crossing scholarship represented in these pages. The theme of this volume—Words, Wealth, and Wisdom—captures something essential about the Nigerian experience. Our nation has long been a place where language does more than communicate: it creates markets, shapes policies, embodies resilience, and carries forward the economic knowledge of generations. This book asks a deceptively simple question: What happens when linguists and economists enter into genuine dialogue? The thirty-five chapters that follow demonstrate that the answer is rich, surprising, and urgently relevant. Interdisciplinary research is not merely an academic fashion; it is a necessity for addressing the complex challenges confronting contemporary Nigeria. Inflation, unemployment, entrepreneurship, and development cannot be fully understood through a single disciplinary lens. When linguists reveal how metaphors shape economic understanding and economists provide empirical grounding for policy discourse, both fields are enriched. When scholars examine the linguistic capital required for market participation or the discursive strategies that justify austerity, they illuminate structures of power and possibility that might otherwise remain invisible. What distinguishes this volume is its dual commitment to scholarly rigour and Nigerian realities. The authors represented here have not imported foreign frameworks uncritically; rather, they engage deeply with local languages, media, communities, and economic challenges. From the Bole community to Bloomberg reports, from Hausa nominal phrases to World Bank assessments, from Nigerian Pidgin protest discourse to poetic economies, this book demonstrates that knowledge production can be both globally conversant and locally grounded. I commend the editors, Major (Dr.) Auwal Abubakar Muhammad and Associate Professor Vivien Bello-Osagie, for their vision and dedication. Building bridges between the Department of Languages and the Department of Economics required more than good intentions; it demanded intellectual generosity, administrative perseverance, and a firm belief that disciplines grow stronger through encounter. The result is a handbook that will serve both as a scholarly reference and as a model for future collaborative endeavours. To the contributors: your willingness to move beyond familiar methodologies and engage with unfamiliar vocabularies exemplifies the intellectual courage our university seeks to cultivate. To the readers—whether you approach this volume as a linguist curious about economic vi applications, an economist intrigued by the discursive dimensions of your field, or a student encountering interdisciplinary work for the first time—I trust you will find insights that reward careful and critical attention. This first volume inaugurates what we hope will become a lasting series, positioning Nigerian Army University Biu as a hub for interdisciplinary inquiry in Nigeria and beyond. As we confront the economic and social challenges of the twenty-first century, scholarship that refuses confinement by disciplinary boundaries becomes not only intellectually compelling but practically indispensable. May this dialogue between words, wealth, and wisdom continue to grow—within these pages and in the lives of those who engage with them.
